Fitness for Life
-OR-
P.S.T (Participation, Skills, and Techniques)

Course Description
Fitness for Life is an individualized, concepts-based, one-semester course designed to give students the knowledge and skills necessary to self-assess, create, conduct, evaluate, and redesign personal fitness programs. It is required of all students and there are no substitutions, including participation in athletics. Fitness for Life may be taken anytime during grades nine through twelve, but it is strongly recommended that students take the class in either the ninth or tenth grade year. The course is a combination of classroom and activity-based learning activities with a focus on proper nutrition and the mastery of skills and concepts necessary for students to become accomplished monitors of their personal lifetime fitness. Through participation, students learn to compare the fitness benefits in a variety of individual and team activities.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of Participation Skills & Techniques students will…..
-demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
-demonstrate understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
-participate regularly in physical activity.
-achieve and maintain health-enhancing levels of physical fitness.
-exhibit responsible personal and social behaviors that show respect for themselves and others in activity settings.
-value physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.

Required Material
The following is a list of materials you will need in order to successfully complete Fitness For Life:

1. A Tuacahn P.E. shirt (Each student enrolled for the class will receive 1 P.E. shirt free of charge). If you lose this shirt you will need to buy a replacement to participate in the class. A replacement, however, can be purchased at the front office at a cost of $8.00. Please be aware that each student must have a P.E. shirt by 8:00am on Monday, August 20th.
2. Proper shoes (i.e. tennis shoes)
3. Sweat pants, athletic pants, or athletic shorts only (please dress modestly).
4. A locker to store valuable items.  See Heather in the office and she will assign you a locker and provide you with a combination lock
5. A water bottle (for hydration)

Student Expectations
In the interest of creating a friendly, structured learning environment, rules must be in place as well as enforced. Therefore, the following rules apply to all students:
1. Listen to Instructions
2. Follow Directions
3. Respect other people and their property (this is a community of learners, and as part of this community we will be hearing about one another’s opinions, ideas, beliefs, and values. Each of us will need to show respect to one another for these differences.

Grading
The following grading scale will be utilized to determine grades (points will be assigned in class). Also, attendance and participation are mandatory to ensure a passing grade.

100-93% A 76-73% C
92-90% A- 72-70% C-
89-87% B+ 69-67% D+
86-83% B 66-63% D
82-80% B- 62-60% D-
79-77% C+ 59% or less F

Note: Students and parents may go online to access attendance, grades, and assignments using SIS.

Assignments
This class will require the completion of many assignments, activities, projects (artifacts), quizzes, and tests. It is important for the student to keep all papers returned after being graded (i.e. place graded assignments in portfolio).

Make-up and Late Work
1. All late work will be docked a minimum of 50% off the assignments original value. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
2. All late work must be handed in two weeks before the end of each quarter. The deadlines for make-up and late work are as follows:
1st Semester: December 7th    2nd Semester: May 7th
3. If you are absent when an assignment is given, you must hand it in with everyone else. Being absent does not equate to more time. Talk to me.
4. If you are going to be gone for an extended period of time, talk to me BEFORE you leave.

Attendance
This year, as with previous years, we will be following the school wide attendance policy at Tuacahn High School (see student planners). Attendance is obviously required to complete this course. Know that we will be doing things that will require you to be here, present in mind and body, each day. If you are unable to attend a class period for any reason, you are responsible for getting the notes, assignments, etc. That you missed. Please do not ask me what you missed while you were absent. Instead, ask a friend or your “class buddy.” Similar to attendance, tardiness will cause your grade to fall as you will miss important information at the beginning of class and lose out on participation points.

Participation
Participation is required for learning. As you will see, participation is essential to complete many assignments in this course, so it is important not only for you to be here, but to participate in the activities. Points may be given at anytime for participation.

Academic Integrity
As the old saying goes, “honesty is the best policy.” This applies not only in academics but in all aspects of life. Cheating and plagiarism will NOT be tolerated. What is plagiarism? Plagiarism-intentional, deliberate attempts to pass off another’s words or ideas as one’s own. If a student should choose to cheat or plagiarize, the student will receive an automatic zero and may be expelled from school. Please do not make this choice. No teacher or administrative personnel wants to see this happen.

School Dress Code
Similar to attendance, this class will abide by the school wide Dress Code Policy. This policy is included in the new student planners and will be discussed on the first day of school at the assembly.
Remember: PE students will be required to wear a Tuacahn PE Shirt and must have modest shorts or pants along with proper athletic shoes (no sandals, open toes shoes or slip-ons).
Americans with Disabilities Act
In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, students needing accommodations may contact the instructor for alternative assignments.

Transportation Requirements
You are responsible to get yourself to and from any activity related to this class unless we have arranged a bus for a field trip. Tuacahn High School is not responsible for the choices you or any other driver makes while driving to and from a THS activity. Please drive responsibly and defensively.
